Looking Back With a Purpose
The ideas for Sawtooth emerged from sweating and burning up in the sun. It is meant to help take a look back at the minimalist and forward thinking design from the 70s to 90s in America. These styles were displayed to me growing up with parents who spent their formative years during this time period. They spent time outside in the sun and lived sporadically. I believe there's a benefit to daily randomness.
Forget yesterday.
What is the point?
Sawtooth is an electronic waveform and a common base for analog synthesizers. How does this come into play for a clothing line?
Well I found myself getting addicted to a sound that seemed to remind me of the 80s, although I was only born shortly after. A past I wasn't part of. This was during a time I was working in the sun every single day and sweating everything out of my body. It left me with a euphoric sort of way to look at life since I had to learn how to enjoy hard work. If you can enjoy back breaking work every day then what does that leave you with in ordinary life? A pure euphoric high 24/7.
Well that wears off once you go back to working indoors and I have chased that mindset ever since. I cling on to that feeling through the memories that I attribute to musicians like Com Truise who offer that picture.
It creates an aperture to the past. I began rendering some ideas of what a brand might look like if I were living in that analog time period. I like the simplicity you can see in retro graphics and artwork. The simple geometry and strong lines you might see formed in an old Testarossa.
I'd like to bring that concept into clothing so we can have simple yet strong ways to represent ourselves. Heritage is beautiful and it's there for free for us to cast our lines from.
